GEOPATH ROUTE L

Your hike takes you around Lake Laacher, the largest volcanic lake in the Eifel. On the Georoute L, several information boards explain the volcanic history of the region. In some places it even bubbles in the water where carbon dioxide rises. These so-called mofettas reveal the volcanic origins of the lake. On the southern shore of the lake is a medieval drainage tunnel. It serves as flood protection for the Maria Laach monastery complex. Beautifully situated, the impressive Maria Laach Abbey and also a stone nature trail invite you to linger. Then continue on the lakeside circular trail. A forest path leads you to its crowning glory, the "Lydia Tower". From this observation tower you can enjoy an impressive view of Lake Laach and the Eifel landscape and on clear days you might even see as far as the Siebengebirge.
